Ortona

It is uncertain the date of foundation of the city date back to the first information Italic peoples, probably Frentani, who lived in the band between Abruzzo Adriatic Ortona, Lanciano and Vasto.

Ortona was, therefore, the port area Frentana. Another hypothesis is that the city was founded by Illyrian pirates from Dalmatia. Italic town was built on the Roman town of which few traces remain road, portions of fence dell'urbs and which were found several artefacts. The fall of the Roman Empire the city came under Byzantine rule during which becomes both a strategic war against the Lombards, who controlled the inland and place for the exchange of goods between them. In 803 it was conquered by the Franks and the adjoining county of Chieti. Following the Norman conquest of 1075 the city was annexed to the Kingdom of Naples. In 1258 are brought to Ortona bones of the Apostle Thomas, from the Greek island of Chios in the Aegean, from flying Ortona Acciaiuoli Leone, returning from a naval expedition in support of the Venetians in Ortona battle against the Genoese. In the first half of the fifteenth century was built the walls still visible in part, by the commander James Caldora. During the fifteenth century, the city has experienced a season of struggles with the nearby city of Lancaster, ended in 1427 with an award peacemaker. On June 30, 1447, because of rivalry between Alfonso of Aragon and the Republic of Venice, Ortona was invaded by the Venetians who destroyed the port, warehouses and naval arsenal but could not penetrate the walls. At this period was therefore the construction of the Aragonese castle, partially collapsed and partially destroyed by wars, but recently restored. The draft of the Aragonese castle is attributed to Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the same period I worked in the nearby Montefeltro. Relations with Venice were wavering, as Ortona sometimes close to this, sometimes preferring to establish relations with the Republic of Ragusa, now Dubrovnik, Croatia. In 1582 the town was acquired by Margaret of Austria, daughter of Charles, the Duchess of Parma and Piacenza. The same Margaret decided in 1584 to build a grand ducal palace designed by Giacomo Della Porta (Palazzo Farnese), never completed because of his death. From 1829 to 1854 there were tentative efforts antiborbonico thanks to a group of conspirators. In 1848 he was elected to Parliament Napoletano the canon of liberal ideas, Dominic Pugliese. On September 9, 1860 Decurionate (Municipal Council) of Ortona acting unanimously Accession to the Kingdom of Italy, or rather the Government of Garibaldi, before the battle of Castelfidardo (Sept. 18) and that of the Volturno (1-2 October). However, as throughout Abruzzo, the phenomenon of banditry remained alive until 1863. Crossing the fascist period, the city becomes the ground of fierce fighting during the Second World War. In the night between 9 and 10 September 1943, the royal family of Savoy, after spending the night in the ducal castle of Crecchio to leave the port of Ortona, Italy to Nazi-occupied land in the already liberated Brindisi and so complete the flight. From Ortona passes the Gustav Line, which has the other end in Cassino, a fortified line of defense in preparing the German forces at the narrowest point of the peninsula. For it is during the Second World War Ortona knows very difficult moments. Most of the people of Ortona was forced to flee their homes. To the north, the German army and south, that the Allies bomb Ortona continuously for about 6 months. The city virtually razed to the ground, was called by Winston Churchill as "Little Stalingrad" by the fact that, similarly to the Russian city, the battle lasted long in the body of the city. Very few buildings still standing and still with serious structural damage. The city was released only in December 1943 when Allied forces crossed the Gustav Line on the Tyrrhenian coast. For this reason the city was awarded the gold medal for civic values.
